Verdict Awaited: Six Convicted in Former Juja MP George Thuo’s Death to Learn Fate in June
The impending sentencing of six individuals convicted of the murder of former Juja Member of Parliament George Thuo is set to be announced on June 21, 2024.
The defendants, identified as Paul Wanaina Boiyo alias Sheki, Christopher Lumbazio Andika alias Lumba, Andrew Karanja Wainaina, Samuel Kuria Ngungi alias Visi, Esther Ndinda Mulinge, and Ruth Watahi Irungu alias Atlanta, are awaiting their fate after being found guilty in connection with Thuo’s demise.
In a landmark ruling earlier this year, the Milimani High Court concluded that the six defendants colluded to poison Thuo at Club Porkies in Kiambu County in 2013, allegedly lacing his drink with cyhalothrine pesticide.
As the date for sentencing approaches, the prosecution has urged the court to impose the maximum penalty, contending that the severity of the crime warrants no leniency, particularly given the absence of remorse displayed by the convicts.
The presence of Thuo’s widow in court during the proceedings further underscored the gravity of the situation. According to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), the deceased’s wife emphasized her husband’s good health prior to the fatal encounter with the convicted individuals.
“The deceased’s wife informed Justice Roseline Korir that her husband was in good health before his untimely demise, which occurred in the company of the convicted individuals,” the ODPP stated in a release.
Echoing the sentiments of the victim’s family, a probation officer’s report emphasized the pursuit of justice, advocating for a substantial sentence commensurate with the severity of the crime.
The impending sentencing of the six defendants marks a critical juncture in the pursuit of justice for George Thuo’s tragic death, highlighting the judicial system’s commitment to upholding the rule of law and ensuring accountability for acts of violence.
