President Bola Tinubu has dismissed Mohammed Bello-Koko from his role as Managing Director of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) and has appointed Abubakar Dantsoho as his successor.

Bello-Koko was appointed Acting MD by President Muhammadu Buhari in May 2021, with his appointment confirmed in February 2022. The NPA MD serves a tenure of five years.

In a statement issued on Friday, Ajuri Ngelale, Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, announced Tinubu’s decision, which also includes the appointment of Adedayo Adeyeye, a former senator, as Chairman of the NPA board.

Speaking on Dantsoho’s qualifications, Ngelale highlighted his academic background, stating that the new MD holds a Doctorate degree in Maritime Technology from Liverpool John Moores University, United Kingdom, and a Master’s degree in International Transport from Cardiff University of Wales, United Kingdom. Prior to his appointment, Dantsoho held various positions within the Nigerian Ports Authority, including Assistant General Manager, Technical Assistant to the Managing Director, Port Manager at Onne Port, and Principal Manager for Tariff & Billing.

Describing Adeyeye, Ngelale noted his extensive experience as a lawyer, journalist, and politician, having served as Minister of State for Works and represented Ekiti South Senatorial District in the Nigerian Senate.

Ngelale conveyed Tinubu’s expectations for the new leadership at NPA, emphasizing the President’s desire for them to uphold excellence in their duties to enhance port efficiency and drive improved industry outcomes.

The changes at the NPA under Tinubu’s administration mark a significant shift in leadership, aimed at leveraging expertise and experience to navigate challenges and foster growth within Nigeria’s maritime sector.
