Drug Possession Charge Against Rapper Kodak Black Dismissed

Drug Possession Charge Against Rapper Kodak Black Dismissed

South Florida rapper Kodak Black, whose legal name is Bill Kapri, saw a significant development in his legal saga as a drug possession charge against him was dismissed by Broward County Circuit Judge Barbara Duffy on Friday. This decision comes two months after his arrest, although a separate drug trafficking case from 2022 remains ongoing.

According to reports from the Sun Sentinel, Judge Duffy’s ruling was based on the indisputable fact presented by the defense that Kapri possessed a legitimate prescription for oxycodone, which had been filled by a pharmacy.

The arrest in question occurred in December in Plantation, Florida, where police discovered Kapri asleep at the wheel with white powder visible around his mouth. Initial field tests suggested the presence of cocaine, but subsequent laboratory analysis confirmed the substance as oxycodone, a medication for which Kapri held a valid prescription dating back to July 2022.

While the dismissal of the drug possession charge marks a significant victory for Kapri, he still faces a separate charge of tampering with evidence related to the same arrest. However, his attorney, Bradford Cohen, is optimistic about the prospects of having this charge dismissed as well.

Currently detained at a federal detention center in Miami since his arrest, Kapri’s legal team hopes that the dismissal of the drug possession charge will prompt a reconsideration of his bond status by a federal judge.

Kapri’s legal troubles date back to 2022 when he was initially arrested on charges of trafficking oxycodone and possession of a controlled substance without a prescription.

Despite his legal battles, Kodak Black has maintained a successful career in the music industry. Under his stage name, he has achieved significant commercial success, selling over 30 million singles. Notably, his track “Super Gremlin” soared to No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 2022.

The dismissal of the drug possession charge represents a notable turn in Kapri’s legal journey, but the resolution of his remaining legal matters remains uncertain as the legal proceedings continue.
