Paris Olympics: Faith Cherotich Secures Steeplechase Bronze as Winfred Yavi Triumphs
Faith Cherotich earned Kenya a bronze medal in the women’s 3,000m steeplechase at the Paris Olympics, with the race ultimately claimed by Kenyan-born Bahraini Winfred Yavi. Cherotich’s performance provided a much-needed boost for Kenya after a challenging competition.
In a high-stakes race featuring elite competitors such as world record holder Beatrice Chepkoech, reigning world champion Winfred Yavi, and defending champion Peruth Chemutai, the contest was marked by intense competition. Chepkoech initially appeared to be in control, seizing the lead after two laps and setting a commanding pace. Yavi and Chemutai, however, stayed close behind, creating an intriguing dynamic.
Despite Chepkoech’s early dominance, she struggled as the race neared its conclusion. The contest intensified between Yavi and Chemutai, with the latter seemingly on course to defend her title. Yavi, however, executed a powerful finishing kick, overtaking Chemutai just before the finish line. Yavi’s final time of 8:52.76 set a new Olympic record, while Chemutai secured silver with a time of 8:53.34.
Cherotich, who had maintained a steady pace throughout the race, took advantage of Chepkoech’s faltering performance. Surging forward in the final stretch, the 20-year-old crossed the finish line in a personal best time of 8:55.15 to clinch third place. This result not only marks her second consecutive bronze medal in the event, following a similar achievement at the 2023 World Championships, but also highlights her potential as Kenya’s emerging star in the steeplechase.
Chepkoech, on the other hand, faced a disappointing outcome. The world record holder finished in sixth place with a time of 9:04.24. This result adds to her previous Olympic finishes of fourth, seventh, and sixth, casting doubt on her prospects for the 2028 Los Angeles Games. At 33, Chepkoech may find it challenging to achieve her long-sought Olympic dream.
For Cherotich, this achievement underscores her growing prominence in the sport. Her performance at the Paris Olympics positions her as a promising figure in Kenya’s athletics future, especially in the steeplechase, a distance where the nation has historically excelled.
