Council of State Expresses Strong Support for President Tinubu’s Administration
The Council of State, which comprises former presidents and heads of state, serves as an advisory body to the executive branch on policy matters. The recent meeting saw the physical attendance of former presidents Goodluck Jonathan and Muhammadu Buhari, while former heads of state Yakubu Gowon and Abdulsalami Abubakar participated virtually.
At the conclusion of the meeting, Dele Alake, Minister of Solid Minerals, addressed the media, highlighting key aspects of the discussions. According to Alake, the National Security Adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ribadu, provided a comprehensive briefing on the nation’s security landscape, including details on the recent #EndBadGovernance protests.
Alake praised Nigerians for their resilience during the protests, noting that the Council commended the public for rejecting any unconstitutional efforts aimed at disrupting the government. He characterized the protests not merely as demonstrations but as attempts to force a change in leadership by illegitimate means. The Council, according to Alake, reaffirmed that any changes in government must be achieved through democratic processes, emphasizing the importance of elections over violence or insurrection.
“The NSA briefed the Council on the security situation and allayed fears concerning the safety and stability of the country. He assured us that all security agencies are fully prepared to defend Nigeria’s democracy and ensure that no unlawful attempts to change the government succeed,” Alake said.
Further details emerged from AbdulRazaq AbdulRahman, Governor of Kwara State and Chairman of the Nigerian Governors’ Forum (NGF), who confirmed that the Council of State’s endorsement was echoed by the NGF. AbdulRahman reported that the Council had delivered a unanimous vote of confidence in President Tinubu.
“The highlight of the meeting was the unanimous vote of confidence in President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, Commander-in-Chief of the Nigerian Armed Forces,” AbdulRahman stated. “The members of the NGF were particularly pleased with the federal executive council’s presentations. Following the main session, an executive meeting between the NGF and the President resulted in productive and candid discussions. We are optimistic about the current trajectory and also express our full support for Mr. President.”
This strong show of support from the Council of State and the NGF underscores a unified stance on the current administration’s direction and policies, as well as its commitment to upholding democratic principles in Nigeria.
