Corps Members’ Monthly Allowance Increased to ₦77,000
The Federal Government has officially approved a significant increase in the monthly allowance for Corps Members to ₦77,000, effective from July 2024. This decision marks a substantial rise from the previous allowance of ₦33,000.
In a statement released on Wednesday, Caroline Embu, a spokesperson for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), explained that this increment aligns with the recent enactment of the National Minimum Wage (Amendment) Act 2024. The announcement follows a letter dated September 25, 2024, from the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission, signed by its Chairman, Ekpo Nta.
Prior to the formal announcement, NYSC Director General Brigadier General YD Ahmed had visited the Chairman of the Commission to advocate for enhanced welfare provisions for Corps Members. Embu emphasized the importance of this increase, stating, “The NYSC Boss is thankful to the Federal Government for the timely gesture and is optimistic that it will not only bring much-needed succour to the Corps Members, but also boost their morale and motivate them to do even more, in their service to the nation.”
The increase in allowance comes after a series of adjustments over the years. In 2020, the monthly stipends for Corps Members were raised from ₦19,800 to ₦33,000, following the signing of a new minimum wage bill which set the national minimum wage at ₦30,000.
Earlier in July, President Bola Tinubu signed the revised minimum wage bill into law, concluding extensive discussions among government officials, labour unions, and private sector representatives. This legislative process culminated in the National Assembly’s approval to raise the National Minimum Wage from ₦30,000 to ₦70,000, reinforcing the government’s commitment to improving the welfare of its citizens.
The increase in allowances for Corps Members is viewed as a timely response to rising living costs and economic challenges faced by young Nigerians. It is expected to not only alleviate financial burdens but also enhance the overall effectiveness and enthusiasm of Corps Members in their roles across various communities.
As the implementation date approaches, many Corps Members and stakeholders are expressing hope that this adjustment will lead to a renewed sense of purpose and dedication among those serving the nation. The NYSC continues to emphasize the importance of its members’ contributions to national development and societal improvement, and this financial boost is seen as a vital support mechanism.
