All-Star Alumni to Headline Final SNL Shows of 2024

All-Star Alumni to Headline Final SNL Shows of 2024

The final episodes of Saturday Night Live for 2024 will see a return to form as two iconic alumni take the stage to close out the year. Chris Rock and Martin Short, both SNL veterans, are set to host the last episodes of the year on December 14 and December 21, respectively, promising a blend of nostalgia and comedy gold.

Rock, known for his sharp wit and groundbreaking stand-up, will make his fourth appearance as host on December 14. The episode will feature Gracie Abrams, the rising star who recently earned a Grammy nomination for her collaboration with Taylor Swift on “Us.” Abrams’ connection to both the music world and the celebrity sphere adds an extra layer of buzz to the episode, with her performing as the musical guest alongside Rock.

“Chris has always had a special place in the SNL family,” said an SNL spokesperson. “His ability to combine sharp commentary with humor makes him a standout host.”

A week later, on December 21, SNL fans will be treated to a holiday special featuring Martin Short, who returns to the stage for his fifth time hosting the show. The beloved actor and comedian, now a staple on Only Murders In The Building, will be joined by musical guest Hozier. Short’s appearance marks a significant milestone in his illustrious career—his induction into the “Five-Timers Club,” a revered group of SNL alumni who have hosted the show five times or more.

Short’s history with SNL dates back to the 1984-85 season, where he performed alongside comedy legends like Billy Crystal and Christopher Guest. His rapport with fellow comedian Steve Martin, also a five-time host, has made them a comedic duo adored by fans of all ages. This episode will be a reunion of sorts, as Short and Martin share the stage once again, much like they did during the 1986 holiday special with their Three Amigos co-star, Chevy Chase.

Before these big events, however, Paul Mescal, the star of Gladiator II and internet sensation, will host the December 7 episode. The actor will be joined by musical guest Shaboozey, whose hit track “Tipsy (A Bar Song)” recently made waves on the Billboard Hot 100, finishing a remarkable 19-week run at number one.

The return of these heavyweights to the SNL stage follows a quieter first half of the season, which saw notable moments but lacked the usual fanfare expected from the 50th anniversary year. However, with the presidential election now behind us, SNL is poised to refocus its energy on celebrating its legacy, and the upcoming episodes promise to deliver just that.

Fans can also look forward to the SNL 50th anniversary special, which is set to air on Sunday, February 16. The event will run for three hours, with more details to be revealed closer to the date. If history is any guide, this special will feature a star-studded celebration of Saturday Night Live‘s enduring cultural impact.
