WAEC Unveils Crackdown on Exam Malpractice, Detains Teachers and Students

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has revealed that six educators and invigilators have been detained for their involvement in examination malpractices during the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE). Additionally, multiple students have been apprehended for similar infractions.

John Kappi, WAEC’s Head of Public Affairs, disclosed that the arrested teachers were reportedly involved in directly assisting students by providing answers. He elaborated on the situation in an interview with Joy News, noting, “In terms of teachers, I can say so far, we have about six of them who have been picked up for various offences. The candidates are a lot of them. It is not easy to give the number right now. We are still putting together the figures, and as and when we are able to compile the list, we will be able to put out the figure.”

Kappi also highlighted the broader scale of the issue, explaining that the council’s monitoring teams discovered a range of malpractice activities. “We have picked up in some of the areas where we were told that they wanted to collect money, and then assist the candidates…We set our monitors around – there were actually widespread examination malpractices. They were able to pick up a number of them. In fact, it’s overwhelming,” he said.

The WAEC official provided further insights into the nature of these violations. “We have looked at the numbers, and basically, it’s about them having foreign material on them and then, in some cases, there’s a report about them writing on the board for the candidates to copy,” Kappi added.

The Council’s swift action underscores its commitment to maintaining the integrity of the examination process. WAEC has implemented rigorous monitoring procedures to identify and address instances of cheating and other forms of examination misconduct. The Council’s investigation is ongoing, and it is expected that additional information about the scale of the malpractice and further actions will be disclosed in the coming days.

WAEC’s crackdown is part of a broader effort to ensure that the examination process remains fair and credible for all candidates. The Council has urged educational institutions and examination centres to uphold strict standards and to cooperate fully with its efforts to combat cheating and other unethical practices.
